The Art of Grateful Living: Simple Practices for Inner Peace and Joy

By Kamille Lavani, AP, RYT-200

Imagine yourself nestled amidst the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains at SoHum Mountain Healing Resort. As you gaze upon the majestic peaks, a feeling of deep gratitude washes over you. Perhaps you recall a recent storm that transformed the landscape, reminding you of the power and resilience of nature, the importance of community, and the value of transformation.

Here at SoHum, we witnessed the incredible spirit of our neighbors, coming together with unwavering support even in the face of challenges. The common thread, even amongst those affected, was a profound appreciation for the gifts we possess.

As the season of giving approaches, let’s carry this beautiful sentiment forward. But before we extend our generosity outwards, let’s nourish ourselves from within. Just as a fertile soil yields abundant crops, a state of self-love fosters the capacity to truly give to others. When we pour from an empty cup, our offerings lack the fullness they deserve.

Abhyanga: A Daily Ritual of Self-Care

One exquisite way to cultivate self-love is through the practice of abhyanga, a sacred Ayurvedic self-massage with warm oil. In Sanskrit, “snehana” translates not only to oil, but also to love.

Create a space of comfort and warmth with candles and incense then gently warm some oil on an oil warmer. As you gently glide the oil across your body, using long strokes on the bones and circular motions on the joints, imagine you are enveloping yourself in a loving embrace.

Consider incorporating this practice two to three times a week, using a tridoshic oil like Banyan Botanicals’ Daily Massage Oil. In the cooler months, sesame seed oil (or Banyan Botanicals Vata Massage Oil) offers a comforting warmth.

Whispers of Gratitude: Throughout Your Day

Sharing gratitude with others is a gift that ripples outward. Not only does it uplift those around you, but it also cultivates a habit of seeking the positive amidst life’s tapestry.

Before retiring for the night, take a moment to reflect on your day. Who brought a smile to your face? Perhaps it was a kind barista, a helpful colleague, or a loved one simply sharing their presence.

Reach out and express your appreciation – a heartfelt text message, a handwritten note, or a simple “thank you” spoken with warmth and sincerity all work wonders. Remember, you’re not just making someone’s day, you’re contributing to a more positive and connected world.

Gratitude in Every Bite

Imagine infusing your meals with love and appreciation. Often, we rush through our days, mindlessly consuming food while multitasking. This can lead to digestive imbalances, as our bodies lack the focus needed for optimal absorption.

Take a deep breath before savoring each bite. Acknowledge the farmers, the chefs, and everyone who played a role in bringing this nourishing meal to your table.

This simple act of mindfulness allows you to extract more from the food, not just nutritionally, but also on a deeper, soul-nourishing level. You might surprise yourself at how quickly this practice becomes second nature, adding a layer of peace and joy to your daily routine.
